When I plan out my survival kit or gear, I think of it in levels. Each level has a purpose and compliments the others. One level of kit has duplicate items as the others so you can resupply your lower level kits or it has more robust items that may weigh heavier and require more logistics.

For me, the transformation from a farm girl who always had livestock and a large garden into a ‘prepper’ has been a gradual evolution, as the events of the world conspired to change my priorities.
You have to have a flexible plan. Be prepared to change and adjust it according to the situation. Your kit levels aid you in maintaining the flexibility and ability to adjust and resupply on the go.
Through currency inflation, centralized money is not only then a means of extracting wealth from all who use it, but also a tool to further the interests of the centralized entities controlling it.
In the absence of matches and lighters (and ignoring the ‘elbow grease’ methods for making fire) several chemical reactions result in combustion, without requiring additional help from a match to get them going.
As you consider the following and plan your food storage, bear in mind that your survival in any scenario will have a great deal to do with the decisions you make now about your food.
Many times depict other communities as backward, alarmist and ‘well, you were looking for trouble’), here in my section of Terra firma some of us have been prepping as long as 180 years ago. I’m living proof that it was successful.
Could the lack of a connection with a local prepper network be the missing piece to your family’s survival strategy in a regional or global disaster? Do you feel the need to connect with folks in your building, on your block, in your subdivision or in the same township for mutual support?
Sometimes, having such a wide array of gun choices can be more of a curse than a blessing. Of course, it’s great that gun technology and manufacturing have evolved to such a point, but if you’re a beginner you simply don’t know which way to go with your first handgun purchase.
My wife and I had never thought about living in a TEOTWAWKI scenario, except when we’d watched movies about it. We’d never thought about owning firearms, even though we had 5 children to protect
In a disaster we all know water is going to be very precious. Water is also one of the hardest things to store. Now is the time to think about ways to get the most out of every drop.
post-TSHTF, it’ll be an even bigger change. We (my family) still have Internet, vehicles, gasoline, washing machine… for now.
The fundamental failure, I believe, and expressed consistently in the prepping literature, is that current prepping philosophy is short-sighted, too individualistic, and not assertive enough of its philosophical underpinnings.
What if I told you that your instructors would be trained Paramedics, Firefighters, Law Enforcement Officers, and Emergency Managers? How about if I throw in free personal protective gear, a first aid kit, and other supplies? Would you be interested?
I am buying many different types of ammo for my Air rifle just because like any other rifle, they all like a specific weights and shapes. Gamo makes a lot of ammo for their rifles but I also buy Daisy and try to get different shapes and different points.
How to sterilize water? Simple: You don’t need to ‘sterilize’ water. Sterilization is the destruction of all microorganisms in, on and around an object. What is needed for safe drinking water, is disinfection
I am going to the point of hiding a large supply of the items needed underground now and in the future to survive. No, not in my back yard – my eggs are not in one basket.
After the shaking had subsided, with no electricity, we were all looking around and assessing the damage. Half of the water in our swimming pool was gone.

With unpredictable natural disasters, do you wonder if your condo is a safe renting and living environment in the event of an earthquake? Fortunately, according to studies, taller buildings like most condos today are designed to be safer than low-rise structures during calamities and disasters. While this is great news for you, it’s no reason to…
Goats can supply milk, meat, hides for clothing and be a work or pack animal if needed. It’s time to look at what the goat has to offer and why I think it is better than a cow.

Let’s face it, food can be heavy and bulky, even if it’s MREs or dehydrated. Other things may take precedence, like equipment and medicine for someone with special needs, or maybe you are just not able to carry much when you bug out. Carrying some fishing line and a few hooks is much easier than carrying cans…

A perennial problem faced by suburban and rural dwellers is obtaining water in the absence of utility provided electric power. Standby generators require fuel of some type, which will eventually run out, and deep drilled wells are poorly suited for use with hand pumps of most types. As a prepper this has always been a concern for…

I live in Chicago, the most dangerous city in America. Not only is it the most dangerous city in America, but it is obnoxiously difficult to get out of even in the best of times. Geographically, it is three-sided (lake Michigan prevents egress to the east) and the only high-speed avenues of approach run North/South. Dismounted movement…

Everything I’ve ever been taught about history, economics, governments, war, commerce and just plain civility was being tested. Every time I turn on the news or listen to talk radio (which I do a lot when I’m not listening to a book) talk to friends next door at an event or…

To approach any scenario in life, the 5 wise men give clarity, direction and purpose to the question at hand. The concept of the 5 Wise Men of Prepping stands for What-Who-When-Why-Where. We should be concerned with the logistics of it all. What survival event are we faced with? A flood ? Fire, Storm, Tornado, EMP,…

Before I start this article, I want to make it plain that I am not a combat trained individual, at least in a military sense. I am a retired deputy sheriff with 25+ years service, a long time prepper, and a person with an innate distrust of our government and politicians, the latter two with good…

Personal accountability and taking responsibility for your own decisions, is (or should be) central to any prepper. It is not as exciting as shiny knives, bug out bags or assembling a personal armory, I’ll admit. But every once in a while it is be good to do a reality check on the world around us. It might help us change our own bad mental habits. The following are two pieces on the subject, each with a slightly different slant: One I like the “Remember…
Editor’s Note: This post is another entry in the Prepper Writing Contest from David Paul Smith. In this article, David discusses a defense method that has been going the internet around for years. I would urge readers to research this method further before relying solely on this for defense. Naturally with any method you employ for self-defense, there could be legal ramifications but I believe the hypothetical envisioned below would preclude anyone calling the police on you. There are many options out there to protect yourself but sometimes you have to get creative with improvised weapons in order to gain…
Editor’s Note: This post is another entry in the Prepper Writing Contest from TekNik. Whenever I meet preppers, I’m usually fascinated by their level of preparedness. The majority have ample supplies of food and water, weapons and the latest technological gizmos. However most seem to be failing to prepare their most indispensable asset, their body. You can have all the fancy gear money can buy but if you’re not able to run, climb a tree, jump over a fence and push that big boulder out-of-the-way, you ain’t gonna survive for long. Why does a prepper need to be in…
Editor’s Note: This post is another entry in the Prepper Writing Contest from John Ferry. Each of us has responsibilities and they all come in different sizes. In times of crisis or emergency, many of us won’t be at home. We will be working or traveling away so the Get Home Bag concept allows us to carry gear that can aid us should we find ourselves away from our stash of prepper essentials. John’s own Get Home Bag list below might help you with ideas if you are still forming your own Get Home Bag for emergencies. This is my…
