Survive and Thrive, in Spite of the Media

World Gone Mad, The (1933)

It’s a jungle out there! Yep, that’s the title of a song by Randy Newman. In one of the lines, he sings “there’s confusion everywhere, no one seems to care.” Indeed, to survive, you have to be smart, very smart.

The Poisonous Cocktail

Look around; people cannot seem to agree on anything. Plus, it’s hard to believe half of what you read in the papers or watch on cable news. It’s not surprising that tempers flare whenever you raise a simple argument. Everybody is seemingly on edge.

And then there’s social unrest, and the greedy politicians. The ripple effect is a messed up society, where everybody is struggling to survive. You have to be more than average to make it.

So, what’s the Way Out?

Sure, things are unstable and might get rocky if you don’t prepare yourself and your family for the future. On the flip-side, however, you don’t have to live an unfulfilling life while doing so. Sometimes, it is the small tweaks that make the biggest difference. Here’s what you need to do to get started.

Take Some Time Off

Yes, get away from the hustles and bustles of life. It’s a rat race out there and the more you get involved, the more it becomes exhausting. So, consider going on a trip. See what other people and cultures are doing to make things even, to cope. You can consider a romantic getaway. The idea is to help you feel reinvigorated, with new energy to tackle the demands of life. To learn by observing and interacting with others, other than watching a YouTube video.

And, it doesn’t have to be something expensive. A weekend of fishing is enough to give you time to breathe fresh air. It is one of the most relaxing “breaks” from the world running amok. If you venture into deep waters, and your goal is not only tuning out for awhile but actually restocking your freezer for those rainy days we all prepare for then do it right and arm yourself with an edge, check out Focus Fishing’s’ Garmin comparisons to help you make the most out of your trip.

The long and short of it is – all work and no play makes both Jack and Jill dull. So work hard at making your downtime truly downtime.

Prepare for Deflation

Prices of basic things will eventually want to deflate. Especially in today’s world of newer, better, way better always just around the corner. Do you know what that means? Well, it implies that you’ll use your credit card beyond the fundamentals. Don’t get caught in the trap though.  Increasing your credit will leave you in compounding debt, leave that to our government and try and eliminate it from your life. Who doesn’t remember that “SPEND” impulse when we got our first credit card? The reality is buyers remorse is more likely the result.

Instead, you should try to remain liquid to enable you to deal with the effects of inflation, and be prepared for those expenses that always pop up. Banks are fine for small savings funds that are readily accessible and liquid. And who hasn’t given and received US T-Bills as a gift. But there are more prudent investments with better yields, do your homework. After all it is YOUR money (unless we become Venezuela).

Prepare for Inflation

Then again, inflation, like deflation, will happen from time to time, especially with the Fed still in existence. How do you survive? Well, by ensuring that you invest your money in assets that will withstand the after-effects of inflation better than most. People in the Orient and Europe for example, buy precious metals and stones as inflation hedges. Do your research on this one please.

And of course be sure to stock up on prepper supplies. Don’t forget to invest in bond funds, but keep the maturities short. Why? When interest rates rise, you can reinvest your dividends for higher yields.  Other than that, learn more ways to cope with inflation.

Maintain Healthy Relationships

You will need other people to survive – irrespective of what the future brings. So create bonds that will last forever with people who can help take your ambitions, business or any other plans to the next level. Love those who love you. Talk to your close friends and family whenever you’re in a stressful situation.

Most importantly, don’t hesitate to let go of people who are not willing to grow. Avoid those with negative energy as well.

Prepare for Emergencies

Yes, as cliché as it sounds, you have to get ready for the unknown. Nothing will go 100% according to your plans. There will be mistakes, errors, surprises, unforeseen consequences, and accidents.  Purchase liability insurance to protect you in case of emergencies. Be sure to get the sum assured right – the last thing that you want is to do is to under-insure your risks.

The Bottom Line

Ensure that you have a plan for your life. Make calculated moves. Get a mentor to help you make the right decisions. As the famous saying goes, “the best revenge is to live well.” Develop resilience to enable you to overcome adversity.  In other words, you should strive to enjoy prosperity in your day to day living.

It is essential to note that you shouldn’t hold grudges for long. And that some people may not be happy with your success. But then again, you don’t live the way you do to impress others, do you?
