Mobile phones these days are not just smart. They are powerful. They make lives better, simpler, and now, safer.

Our idea of a traditional home security system is something that’s bulky, hard to install, and difficult to operate. However, over the past decade, electronic gadgets and systems went from wireless and compact to mobile-friendly. Today, anything can be accessed and controlled via smart phone, including your home security and monitoring system.

Smartphone-enabled security systems are gaining steam worldwide. Home improvement giant Lowe’s found in a survey that 50% of Americans prefer a do-it-yourself platform in securing their homes, and 70% of smart phone users wish that they could just control everything from their mobile device.

Well, now you can control several aspects of your home anytime and from anywhere. More than just keeping in touch with friends and scanning your social media pages, you can also utilize your phone to improve security in your home. Here are 8 easy ways your smart phone can help you in guarding your home:

Pull up live images

You can turn your smartphones into surveillance cameras and you don’t have to be tech-savvy to do so. There are mobile applications and software you can use to hook up your security cameras to your smartphone. With these, you can view real-time images and videos of your home. You can also keep an eye on everything that matters to you wherever you are. You can see who are the people inside your house, what they are doing, and check up on the babysitter, etc.

Get instant alerts

A smartphone can improve home security by sending you real-time alerts. If anything changes, your phone can notify you via a text message, a photo, or a video. For example, if you left your lights on, forgot to lock the doors, or if any motion is detected, you will be alerted. You may also set the level of sensitivity to avoid frequent false alarms. The important thing is that as soon as your security system finds something unusual; you have time to prevent bad things from happening.

Remotely manage home security

You don’t have to be home to change the settings in your security system. Using a smartphone for guarding your house is a convenient way to arm, disarm, and make modifications in your home security system. This is an easy way to make necessary changes depending on the need. For example, if your house help informs you of a vehicle unusually roaming around your house, you can change the settings to increase the sensitivity of your security system and give you frequent alerts.

Track down what matters

Scale up the monitoring capabilities of your security system by using your smartphone to track down what matters to you. Like Honeywell Total Connect, you can keep tabs on the real-time GPS location of family members. Is your toddler already in school? Is your husband stuck in traffic? You can also monitor lost and stolen belongings for a higher chance of recovering them.

Control with a click

You can also build a smart home with Honeywell Total Connect as it allows you to automate your home more efficiently and conveniently. Pairing it with your smartphone, you can lock and unlock doors, turn on and off the lights, and unplug appliances that you normally forget to unplug like the curling iron or heater. You can also use it to adjust the thermostat or dim the lights so that a warm (or cool) home with lighting to match your mood will welcome you after a long day at work. Making your home smarter will help you save you on energy costs and consequently help the environment.

Make sure everyone is connected

Everyone in your house can be connected to your home’s security system via their phones. There are available apps that let you connect to as many phones as possible. In this case, no one gets left behind. You can also set up notifications to alert everyone of abnormal goings-on detected by your home security system. A built-in siren can also be set so that it comes off when necessary and alerts everyone.

Record and capture

Another way that your smartphone can improve home security is by having the ability to record and capture images and videos that are important to you. There are security systems paired with smartphones that let you tap a record button, capture the video, and upload it to your YouTube account. You can also configure it so that it automatically records a video when it detects unusual motion. This is an important feature so that if an intruder destroys the camera, at least you have the evidence stored in your phone and online. Recorded images and videos will help the police identify and catch the bad guys.

Puts police on alert

With your home security system and smartphone connected with each other, it would be much easier to tip off the police and put them on alert if your surveillance cameras captured anything suspicious. There are many security systems that can connect your system to the police. This increases the chance of bad guys getting caught while still in the property and in the act of stealing something from your home. In other words, you don’t only get to secure your home, it also helps deter crime in your community.

Your smartphone can help you with virtually anything these days. It helps you keep in touch with friends and family, helps you pay your bills, helps you avoid traffic jams, and now helps you keep tabs on your home and family. Smartphones hooked to your home security system allows you to take control anything from surveillance cameras and motion sensors to locking doors and turning off lights. Now, you are not only ensured that your home is secure and that your loved ones are safe, you are also able to build a smarter home for your family.
